Use dynamic budget

Overview

Dynamic budget lets the Kamino delivery engine automatically distribute a campaign budget across line items based on their historical AdSpend. Budget allocation is recalculated daily according to the delivery behavior of each line item.

This article explains how dynamic budget affects delivery, budget allocation, pacing, reporting, and monitoring. It also describes supported campaign types, budget allocation rules, workflow behavior, and feature limitations.

Key benefits

The main benefits of dynamic budget include:

  • Reducing manual budget monitoring at the line-item level.
  • Automatically reallocating budget toward line items with higher AdSpend from previous days.
  • Improving daily budget utilization without changing pacing or priority logic.

Scope

The feature scope is defined as follows:

  • Dynamic budget is available only for Monetization—Guaranteed campaigns.
  • Dynamic budget is unavailable for Sponsored Product (single line item), Trade, or Auto-promotion campaigns.
  • Dynamic budget applies only to line-item budgets and not to the global campaign budget.

Key limitations and warning points

Dynamic budget comes with several limitations and important considerations for users.

Delivery and metrics

Dynamic budget optimizes daily budget allocation rather than total campaign budget consumption. It doesn't guarantee full campaign budget delivery and relies only on historical AdSpend. It doesn't take ROAS or other performance metrics into account. If targeted inventory capacity is limited, the full campaign budget might not be spent even though the available budget is fully allocated across dynamic line items.

Lockout line items

Lockout line items require close monitoring, as they might affect how budget is distributed across the campaign.

Modifying budget

Changes to custom line item budgets directly affect how budget is distributed across dynamic line items, while the overall campaign budget remains unchanged.

Increasing a custom line item budget reduces the budget available to dynamic line items. Decreasing a custom line item budget increases the budget available to dynamic line items.

Budget allocation is recalculated immediately when a custom line item budget is modified. Adding a new dynamic line item also triggers an immediate recalculation of budget allocation across all dynamic line items.

Copying line items

Dynamic budget can significantly alter delivery patterns, and dynamic line items cannot be copied while dynamic budget is enabled.

Pausing and reactivating line items

If a dynamic line item is paused, its allocated budget isn't automatically redistributed to other dynamic line items.

If the line item isn't reactivated before the campaign ends, part of the campaign budget might remain unused and effectively locked.

Budget allocation

When enabled, Kamino distributes available campaign funds across dynamic line items based on historical AdSpend. This allocation automatically recalculates daily, using a lookback window equal to half the line-item's duration, as well as immediately following any budget modifications. Because the allocation logic relies entirely on historical AdSpend, Kamino always allocates 100% of the available budget across dynamic line items. This doesn't guarantee that the full campaign budget will be delivered, as actual delivery still depends on available inventory and campaign conditions.

Line items can coexist within the same campaign as:

  • Custom line items: budgets manually defined by the user.
  • Dynamic line items: budgets automatically calculated by Kamino daily.

Allocation rule

The daily budget is distributed according to a fixed allocation logic.

  • 70% of the daily budget is allocated proportionally to each line item's historical AdSpend.
  • 30% of the daily budget is evenly distributed across all line items to ensure visibility.

Day 1 behavior (immediate start)

Line items created and scheduled to start on the same day begin delivering immediately.

On the first day, all new dynamic line items have zero historical AdSpend. Because of this, the 70% delivery-based portion of the allocation is distributed evenly across all dynamic line items. Combined with the 30% equal distribution, this means 100% of the available daily budget is distributed evenly across all dynamic line items on the first day.

Beginning on the following day, Kamino recalculates the allocation using the first day's AdSpend, allowing budget distribution to shift according to the standard allocation logic.

Configure dynamic budget

To configure dynamic budget, follow these steps:

  1. Log into the Kamino platform
  2. From the left menu, select Campaigns > Dashboard.
  3. Navigate to the Guaranteed dashboard.
  4. Locate your campaign by searching for the campaign name or line item name.
  5. In the Actions column, click Access campaign dashboard.
  6. In the Budget column, select Dynamic. ⓘ Note: manual budget input isn't required when dynamic mode is active.

Switching modes

Budget behavior changes depending on the direction of the mode switch.

  • Dynamic to Custom: you must define a budget (AdSpend or last calculated budget).
  • Custom to Dynamic: manual budget input is disabled and Kamino takes over allocation.

If a line item switches between modes on the same day, the original custom budget is restored. Otherwise, the previous day’s dynamic calculation is used.

Interactions with pacing

Pacing settings remain fully configurable for dynamic line items. Dynamic budget doesn't override pacing logic.

Combining dynamic budget with ASAP pacing might skew budget allocation.

Dashboard and monitoring

Visibility

Budget and status information varies depending on the line item’s budget mode. Line items are shown as Custom, Dynamic, or Lockout. For dynamic line items, budget fields aren’t displayed directly in the interface.

If needed, the allocated budget can be viewed by temporarily switching the line item to Custom, checking the value, and then switching it back to Dynamic.

The On Target metric isn't displayed for dynamic line items.

Reporting

AdSpend calculation remains unchanged. Dynamic budgets aren't explicitly shown in reports.
