Understand product hierarchy and variations

Overview

In some cases, products can be split into multiple versions. These versions are described by attributes that may differ from one product to another. For example, a t-shirt model can have different colors and sizes.

The product itself is a specific version of a product model. This is the item that consumers purchase. Standard IDs, such as GTIN or EAN, represent this item.

Definitions

The following definitions describe the key terms used to explain the product hierarchy:

  • Product (or child product): the item purchased by a consumer. It's represented by a unique ID and is the most granular level of the hierarchy.
  • Product variant: an optional, intermediary subdivision of a model.
  • Parent product: an optional base product available in multiple versions.

For example:

  • Parent ID: Naruto t-shirt
  • Variant ID: Black Naruto t-shirt
  • Product ID: Black Naruto t-shirt — Size XL

Campaign setup

You must always set up the product ID or EAN because this is the item purchased by the consumer. You only need to set up one variation, not all of them.

For example, in your line item, you can set up the Black Naruto t-shirt XL instead of adding sizes L, M, and S.

Ensure that the selected product ID is in stock, preferably with high stock levels.

Choose your keywords carefully if there's a specific variation, specifically color.

Reporting

To view all sales for a product, you must enter all variations of the product ID at the campaign level. Your report displays a line for each purchased variation.
